History

In 1895, a Lithuanian cobbler named Morris Rubin came to London on a boat from Russia. He visited a friend, who was a shoemaker, and eventually Morris started his own business making shoes in Whitechapel. He was the first in a generation of East End shoemakers. His son, Louis, and his grandson, Daniel, both entered the industry and became involved with the Hackney based factory London Lane Shoes in the 1970s.

London Lane Shoes operated between the 1960s and 1980s. It opened in Haggerston and later moved to 1 Downs Park Road, Dalston. At the time, Hackney was a central location for shoe making in the U.K. The company made unbranded women's shoes for brands like Clark’s and Marks & Spencer’s. The London Lane factory produced many popular styles in order to restock shops across London at short notice. London Lane Shoes was previously bought by Clark’s in 1965 and then sold in 1973.

In 1986, London Lane Shoes closed due to competition with overseas manufacturing. Daniel Rubin remained within the shoemaking industry and founded the footwear brand, Dune, in 1992. Today, London Lane is based in Leicester and - although under different ownership - still manufactures shoes.
