NALGO (Hackney)
1905
NALGO was the National Association of Local Government Officers', a trade union which functioned until 1993. It represented workers within the public sector such as those in local government. In Hackney's history, NALGO have supported strikes and other industrial action by local government employees.
In 1989, NALGO in Hackney lead an anti-deportation campaign to support Georgina Addai's fight to stay in the UK - she was a Hackney Council worker.
In 1993, NUPE (National Union of Public Employees, COHSE (Confederation of Health Service Employees) and NALGO merged to form Unison, a new trade union which represents local government and public sector employees.
