Thomas Edward Browne (or T.E.Browne) was an Air Raid Precautions Warden for Clapton during the Second World War (1939-1945). He lived with his parents and sisters on 75 Casimir Road. During the day he worked as a solicitor's clerk, and volunteered as a warden in the evenings and at weekends.
During this time, he kept detailed diaries giving a fascinating personal account about his life as an ARP warden, with pencil entries giving an unofficial record of war work. In addition to being a Clapton warden, he also helped to train his fellow Hackney ARP workers, and made up models to assist him in his work.
After his death in 1992, his collection of papers, diaries and models were acquired jointly by Hackney Museum and Hackney Archives at an auction in Leicester.
His papers are available at Hackney Archives (ref. D/F/BRO).
