History

Zenzele was founded by Betty Nosipho Hlela in Haggerston c.2000 with other women of southern African heritage to create costumes and jewellery using recycled materials. Many of her items featured her label ‘Born in Hackney’.

The word ‘Zenzele’ means self-reliance and is often used to describe and promote organisations and schemes which encourage self-help. In Zulu, spoken by Betty and many people in South Africa, it literally means ‘do it yourself’.
