Biography
Bessie Codd was born in Hackney, one of 5 children to parents Olive Grace and Frederick William Codd, a printing machine packer. The family lived at 24 Presburg at the time of her birth, and at some point between 1911-1913 they had moved to 190 Millfields Road, Clapton.
Bessie attended Millfields Road School. In 1925/1926 the family moved to 60 Fletching Road, Clapton, where they lived for at least a decade. In 1930 her parents gifted her a chair bed and table, which in 1994 were donated to Hackney Museum. Around 1935-1939 Bessie, her parents and sisters moved between 1935-1939 to ‘Olivedene’ 112 Aragon Road, Morden.
In 1939 she was working as a dress machinist. She continued to live in Morden with her family, until at some point between 1968-1972 Bessie and her sister Lilian moved to the village of Minard in Argyll, Scotland.
