History

The Communist Party of Great Britain 9CPGB) was a political party founded after several socialist and Marxist groups merged in 1920. Other related branches of the CPGB relevant to Hackney are the London Communist Party and the Hackney Communist Party.

The CPGB's presence in Hackney and the East End can be noted at the Battle of Cable Street in 1936, when Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists organised a march through Jewish communities such as Bethnal Green and Shoreditch. They were met with a counter-demonstration of both organised and unorganised groups. These included trade unions, anti-fascists, Jews and communists.

Notable Hackney-based CPGB members and communists throughout history include Sara Wesker and Sam Elsbury - both figures in the garment trade unions during the 1920s and 1930s. Mick Mindel - also a garment trade union leader but rising to prominence slightly later than Wesker and Elsbury - was based in Hackney. Wesker and Mindel both grew up in the Rothschild Buildings in Spitalfields, a tenement block which doubled as a hub of activity for Jewish communism. Wesker and Mindel were both present at the Battle of Cable Street.

Former CPGB member and communist activist Monty Goldman stood for election for Mayor of Hackney in both 2002 and 2010 and for parliament in 1997 and 2005. In his latter mayoral election campaign, Goldman secured 2033 votes.
