Colin O'Brien was born in Clerkenwell and lived in Hackney since 1984. He photographed London continuously since 1948, when his spellbinding pictures evoked the poetry and pathos of the threadbare years in the aftermath of the Second World War. His work is distinguished by its human sympathy and aesthetic flair and it stands up to comparison with any of the masters of twentieth century British photography.
Colin devoted himself to taking photographs to create a social documentary of Hackney and its surrounding areas. He created unforgettable images documenting a changing city through more than seven decades.
