Hanson, Kenrick
Biography
Kenrick Hanson was born in Jamaica and moved to the UK in 1962. He was Mayor of Hackney from 1984-1985.
He worked as a mechanical assistant at TfL. He first became involved in the community by becoming a parent governor at Princess May Primary School where his daughter attended nursery, before being appointed secretary of the tenants’ association at the Kingsmead Estate, Homerton. In this role he took the Greater London Authority to court for not fulfilling its obligations to keep the estate tidy.
He was voted a labour councillor for King's Park in 1982, when he received a record breaking amount of votes for the ward. He became vice-chair of housing and in 1984 was appointed Mayor. He remained a councillor for 18 years until 2001.
