History

The Dissenters of Newington Green were a mixed group of nonconformists who opposed religious changes that took place after the English Restoration. They were free-thinkers and radicals who wanted to follow different ways of life to those promoted by the Government and Crown such as variations on Protestantism. Dissenters were also made up of Quakers, Pacifists and Puritans. They tended to live in areas that were tolerant of their beliefs and were often restricted to certain locations by the state. Newington Green was one of these places; at the time it was still an agricultural village, outside of London. In these areas, they set up churches and educational institutions called Dissenting academies.
