Biography

Eddy Grant is a musician, producer and label owner. He was born in Guyana and moved to London to join his parents - who both lived and worked in the U.K. - in 1960. In 1965, he formed the band The Equals with four other members. The band was one of the only 'racially-integrated' bands at the time. They had commercial success with many Top 40 hits. In 1969, the band were involved in a car accident in Germany, and as a result in 1971 Eddy Grant suffered heart and lung injuries. He stopped touring with the band but continued to write songs.

Eddy Grant then started Coach House Studios, based in Stamford Hill, which played a vital role in supporting the development of African and Caribbean music in the UK. He also started Ice Records, his own record label, in 1974 and went on to buy his own pressing plant – the first vinyl manufacturing service in Europe owned by a person of African origin.
