Soul II Soul
1988
Soul II Soul are a music collective and sound system, which formed in 1988 in London. They had many members, including DJ and producer Jazzie B (OBE) who was born in Hackney. The group ran club nights at London venues, namely Fridge nightclub in Brixton and the Africa Centre in Soho. As a collective, they helped to pioneer EDM and club culture in the U.K. in the late 80s, merging a combination of genres from across the globe and appealing to a wide, mixed audience. Soul II Soul have sold millions of records across the world including 'Keep on Movin'' and 'Back to Life'. They have had chart topping albums, won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for 5 BRIT Awards.
Soul II Soul created the Funki Dred record label, artwork, clothing line and 'lifestyle'; the logo is a cartoon of Soul II Soul member Jazzie B which features heavily on their merchandise. After ten years as a collective and several line-up changes, Soul II Soul disbanded in 1998 - members parted ways to pursue solo careers. Some of the Funki Dreds / Soul II Soul have since reformed; they performed together at Lovebox Festival in 2007 and 2014 and have toured sinced.
