Biography

Alice Mabel Davis was born in Hackney and lived at 55 Sigdon Road, a house which no longer stands due to bombing during WWII. Alice's father, Joseph James Caterer, worked for Samuel Toye & Co., a bristles manufacturer in Hackney (2 Oswald Street). Joseph James died circa. 1936.

Alice married Edward Howard Davis and had a daughter - Augusta Mabel Maria Davis (later Markle). In around 1940, Alice and Edward became estranged and Alice and her daughter Augusta resided in a house on the corner of Malvern Road and Lenthall Road in Dalston. Alice and Angela attended a local church - St Phillips on Richmond Road. They became friends with the vicar, Reverend Sidney Addison Marsh. Alice volunteered at the church caring for vestments, flowers and playing the organ.

Reverend Marsh gifted Alice a black textile for her help at the church. It is believed that Marsh had previously been in the army, and may have acquired the textile in the East, potentially India. Reverend Marsh died on 19th October 1940 due to an unexploded bomb.

Augusta and Alice had moved to Cambridge, reunited with Edward, Alice's husband and Augusta's father. They were told of the news of Marsh's passing whilst living there.

Later in life, Alice moved to the U.S and eventually Canada. Augusta married Herbert Van Markle and lived with him in Canada.
