History

Connecting All Communities is a community organisation based in Hackney. Their mission is to tackle social isolation and promote community cohesion especially in the Somali and wider east African communities in Hackney. They offer language classes, support and advice as well as free hot food for those in need - they often cooked and gave out food to homeless people during celebrations like Ramadan or Christmas.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group (founded by Shukri Adan) made free hot meals and distributed them to families in need. Connecting All Communities first recruited volunteers in the form of Shukri's friends and families. As the demand for food grew, they sought funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and Hackney Council. Shukri and her family were cooking around 100 hot meals a day at the peak of the pandemic.

On August 2 2020, Connecting All Communities handed out hot meals and food to families as part of an Eid celebration at Hackney Downs. Social distancing meant that the celebrations had to be outside. The day was funded by the Peabody Trust.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Connecting All Communities has continued their important work. They offer language classes, workshops, street iftar, homelessness dinners, mentoring, sports and fitness classes and cooking classes.
