History
Inner London Education Authority was the local education authority for the City of London and the 12 boroughs of inner London, running a wide range of services from schools to adult education classes, to running the Geffrye Museum (later 'Museum of the Home') in Hoxton. It's centralised role saw the distribution of resources between boroughs. Speaking in Parliament in March 1988, MP Diane Abbott stated that Hackney contributed £33 million to ILEA and received £93 million.
ILEA fought off multiple attempts to abolish it during the 1980s. In Hackney, parents, school governors, staff, community groups and Hackney Council were strongly opposed to the breaking up of the ILEA. In November 1983 the 'Hackney Save ILEA Campaign' was created.
In 1988, the government's Education Secretary Kenneth Baker announced that he was amedining his new education bill to include the abolition of the ILEA, handing over the running of local education to the inner London borough councils in April 1990.
