Devi Pershad Pandit was the first in his family to arrive in London, possibly c.1921. He trained as a tailor and went on to establish Pandit & Partners, on Balls Pond Road, manufacturing women's dressing gowns.
Devi Pershad probably changed his surname from 'Sharma' to 'Pandit', and when his wife and sons joined him in 1946, they went by 'Sharma'. Devi Pandit lived at various addresses in Hackney, including Richmond Road (1939) and Pedro Street, Clapton (1940s onwards).
