Blending Cultures
When Yared Markos roasts his coffee, something magical is released into the air.
Yared owns a coffee business, Kaffa Coffee, in the heart of Gillett Square, Dalston. His coffee beans come from Kaffa in Ethiopia, where coffee was first discovered and also where Yared was born.
Yared came to London over 20 years ago. He immediately noticed that there was nothing in London that reflected his own culture. Filling this gap, he opened a coffee stall in Camden Market, before moving to Dalston.
Coffee brings the community together in Ethiopia. Gatherings where people drink coffee allow the community to notice when someone needs help.
Recognising the global communities in Dalston, Yared uses coffee to bring a diversity of groups together. Kaffa Live is an annual party in Gillett Square, where Yared partners with local artists and businesses to ‘blend cultures through coffee’. For example, Yared and another business make Coffee Gelato, recognising the shared history and love of coffee between Ethiopia and Italy.
