"Making Our Own
Niama is celebrating Somalian culture and heritage with her new group for Somali women living in Hackney.
Niama was born in Somalia and grew up in its capital city, Mogadishu. She loves Somalia, its closeness to the sea and its history. She loves that everyone makes their own clothes and belongings with local materials such as wood and grass.
When she was a teenager, Niama and her family left Somalia. They moved to Ethiopia in 2004, and then to Hackney in 2005. Niama didn’t know many people and didn’t know how to speak English. She had her son at the age of 18, which led to her leaving college.
Almost 20 years later, Niama is inspired by her experience to help others in her community. Over the summer, she started a Somali women’s support group in Hackney. The first meeting was held in June 2023, where they drank traditional Somali tea. The group of 16 people discussed what they would like to learn, choosing computer skills, cooking and learning Arabic in order to read the Qur’an".
