Biography

Mary Ann Bourlet owned and ran a confectioner/tobacconist shop at 17 Berger Road, Homerton.

Born in Kings Cross, she married labourer Henry Bourlet c. 1885, and in 1891 they were living with his extended family at 26 Wendon Street, Bow. They would go on to have 8 children together.

By 1901 they had moved to Homerton, sharing a house at 62 Durrington Road with another family.

By 1910, Mary Ann acquired and was running a confectioners on Berger Road. In both directories and in the census she is listed as the business owner. The family run the shop, called "The Little Wonder", until 1937.

In 28 January 1930 the Daily Mirror mentions Mary Ann receiving a £10 payment for a home accident at the Berger road property which had resulted in a broken leg. By 1939 She and two of her daughters had moved to Somerset.

In the 1980s, her granddaughter donated personal items belonging to Mary Ann to Hackney Museum.
