Jamdagni, Sri Mati (Mrs)
1927
1993
Born in India, Sri Mati Jamdagni (nee Sharma) probably travelled to London in 1950 to join her parents and brothers. Sri Mati's father established Pandt & Partners on Balls Pond Road, manufacturing women's dressing gowns.
Sri Mati married Kidar Singh in 1942 and learnt how to use a sewing machine while in India as her husband, Kidar Singh, had bought her a Singer sewing machine in December 1948. She later used these skills in Hackney when she was part of the pool of sewing machinists who made up the garments at Pandit & Partners. Similar to many women at the time, she worked from home doing ‘piecework’, which fitted in around family and housework responsibilities.
Sri Mati used her hard-earned income to treat her children to sweets, cakes, records and other items available in and around Ridley Road Market.
