Pandit & Partners Limited
1950s
Pandit & Bros. was established in on Balls Pond Road in the 1950s by Devi Pershad Pandit. He was a trained tailor from India, living in Hackney possibly in the 1920s, but definitely by the 1930s.
The company specialised in women's dressing gowns and housecoats, and made these from its factory in Dalston. Many women worked for the factory in supporting administrative roles, and from home, supplying 'piecework'. The company supplied their quality manufactured products to various fashion labels across London so it is difficult to identify products made by Pandit & Bros. as they are camouflaged by the fashion label.
In 1962 the company changed its name to Pandit & Partners Limited as it was now a company limited by shares. It continued until the 1980s however the changes to domestic heating systems and the growing popularity of central heating and radiators meant there was a steady decline in the types of garments it manufactured and it closed in the 1980s.
