Save Hackney Campaign
Date
1983
History
The 'Save Hackney Campaign' began in 1983 aiming to show Hackney residents all of the things - jobs, services, and the community sector - that were threatened by rate capping, and the abolition of the GLC. About 30 groups and organisations took part in the campaign. This included:
- Hackney Under 5s
- Pensioners Link,
- The Federation of Hackney Tenants’ Associations
- Hackney Asian Centre
- Dalston Children’s Centre
- Handicapped Children in Hackney
- The Muslim Centre
- Morningside Community Association
- Homerton Adventure Playground
Activities organised by the campaign were broad and creative. There was a competition for the worst pavement in Hackney, 150 local school children sailed up the Thames to Westminster to lobby MPs, members of 30 community groups came together to eat breakfast with junior minister Sir George Young on the Hackney Town Hall steps and in March 1985 a large parade was staged through the streets of Hackney.
