Hackney Women Harriers

Hackney Women Harriers was a running club for women. Although primarily a women’s club, most of the runners were lesbians. Its first meeting was held at the Duke of Wellington pub on Balls Pond Road, a lesbian-friendly venue known for its women-only evenings.
Over the next ten years members of Hackney Women Harriers took part in races across the UK and in Europe. Members would travel together to races, and those not entering would attend as supporters.
The social part of the club became just as important to members as the running. Along with evenings at the Duke of Wellington and later the Due South lesbian bar in Stoke Newington, runners also enjoyed fancy dress parties together.
