Biography

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician, and head of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he received a life imprisonment by the apartheid government following his fight against South Africa's discriminatory racial laws.

From 1980, his imprisonment and campaigning for his release became a focus of the international anti-apartheid movement. In 1981, the Hackney Anti-Apartheid Group held a film and social evening in support of Nelson Mandela at the All Nations Club. In April 1984, in recognition and solidarity with Mandela, Hackney Council renamed Morley House in Stoke Newington to Nelson Mandela house.

He was released in 1990, and went on to serve as President of South Africa 1994-1999, the first black South African to hold the office.
