History

The 'Save the Stoke Newington Reservoirs and Filter Beds' campaign (1986-1999) was initiated by a group of local people living in the Stoke Newington and Woodberry Down neighbourhoods, in response to Thames Water's plans for sale of and development over the whole green area. Thames Water intended to build mixed housing and leisure facilities on on the West and East Reservoirs and a retail park on the filter beds.

Local campaigners activated through committee meetings, newsletters, fund raisings, demonstrations and by being present at local events, such as the Stoke Newington Festival. The efforts of the campaign saw the successful retention of the reservoirs.

The Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre is now a venue for water sports, while the East Reservoir was opened the public for the first time in 2016 by Sir David Attenborough as the 'Woodberry Wetlands', and it is now governed by the Wildlife Trust.
