Object history
Billiards, the name given to a number of table and cue sports such as pool, became a popular pastime during the latter 1800s. However, as this was mostly played in pubs, temperance supporters opened venues such as the Hackney Temperance Billiard Hall on 331 Mare Street, where the game could be played away from the temptation of alcohol. Architects of these purpose-built billiards halls would replicate the appearance of public houses in their design.
