Disappearing Outdoor Pursuits
The rise of industrialisation and the changing environment impacted on many popular activities. The River Lea was famous for its fishing. There was angling at Mount Pleasant in 1838 but the increase from sewage gradually killed off all the fish.
In the winter, outdoor skating was a popular activity. In particular, the Hackney Marshes would flood then freeze, allowing people miles of open free-skating while holding lanterns, sometimes to music. However this could be dangerous; reports describe attacks from muggers on skates. A key attraction of the tea garden at The Rosemary Branch, Hoxton was a pond used for skating until it suddenly dried up around 1830.
