Exhibition Label

"The leaflet is about an historic event in 1987 when Diane Abbott, aged 34, campaigned to become the Labour Party MP for Hackney North & Stoke Newington. She entered politics in 1982 as a Labour councillor for Westminster City Council. The campaign leaflet was left in local constituents' letter boxes if they were not at home when she called. She won on 11th June 1987, and became Britain's first black female parliamentarian.

I have chosen this object because it is represents a time when history was about to be made. The leaflet contains information concerning an ardent campaigner who has continued to fight for the rights of other people and for good causes far beyond 1987."
