Object history

The Afro-Caribbean Centre was a planned £2.7-3.5 million Hackney Council development programme to build an Afro-Caribbean centre at Clapton Way, Hackney Downs.

First proposed in 1983, the first of three intended stages of the project was the opening of four workshops for black businesses, completed in 1986 using advice and funding from the Department of the Environment.

Further stages had planned a multi-purpose main building with meeting, club and media resource rooms as well as a library, creche facilities and a restaurant, for which the government had offered £1.5 million towards. Further funding was sought for a theatre and amenities for performing arts. The intention was that once the project was completed local groups would manage the centre.

However, by December 1987 it was reported that the national government decided to no longer fund the building of the centre, to the anger of Hackney councillors and community leaders.

Black Action in Hackney

Fair and equal representation for Hackney’s diverse communities on local and national issue was a challenge. Working groups and organisations were setup to improve this with specific focus on target groups, such as the Black People’s Association and Black and Ethnic Minority Women.
Others were showing their sympathies with groups, movements or activities, such as radical feminism or the Black Power political movement. Both of these are
thought to use the Black Power fist within the symbol for female gender.
