I am writing to you as Chairman of the Hackney Empire Preservation Trust because, quite simply, we need your help NOW to raise the money to buy this beautiful theatre from Mecca Leisure. To do this the Trust has to find £50,000 by May this year and a further £100,000 by February 1989 - that's £150,000 altogether.
Further funds will be needed to restore inside and outside but they can wait..THE VITAL TASK IS TO RAISE THE FIRST INSTALMENT.
For the past year we have witnessed the re-birth of the Hackney Empire as London's most exciting theatre after many years obscurity as a bingo hall. We have staged a truly wide variety of shows featuring international stars and the hitherto unknown.
Slowly, our operation has become economically viable. On a day-to-day basis it keeps in the black through a mixture of hiring out and in-house promotion, although it depends on voluntary help from a wide range of local enthusiasts. I believe that we are set to play an important part in the vital task of winning new audiences to popular theatre.
To some the freehold price of £150,000 might not seem a lot - a house can cost more in Hackney - but we still have to raise every single penny ourselves. May is getting perilously close and, to repeat, that's when the first £50,000 is due. Here is what you can do to help raise that money:
1. Offer your services to HEPT.
2. Collect on our behalf.
3. Make a donation.
The Hackney Empire is London's only major unfunded theatre run on a non-profit-making basis and aiming its programming at a truly wide variety of audience.
If you can help, ring the Hackney Empire at the above number NOW. There is no time to lose.
