Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 1987. It recognised the increased ethnic diversity in the country and the failings of history teaching in British schools. Black historical figures were often only represented as slaves or as subjects of European empires.
Since its launch in London, it has become an annual event across the country every October.
This badge features the Sankofa bird, a West African Adinkra symbol meaning ‘Look backwards, go forwards’, or ‘learn from the past to build for the future’.
