Object history

This type of dressmaking sample was common in the last decades of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th.

Dressmaking samples were created by girls, usually at orphanages, charity schools, or schools for the poor and those who would need to work after receiving their education. as a way to practice a variety of dressmaking skills all at once. These skills involved hems, pleats, plackets (a finished opening in the upper part of trousers or skirts, or at the neck, front, or sleeve of a garment), cuffs, darns, patches, buttonholes, and broderie anglais (a needlework technique that combines cutwork, embroidery, and needle lace).
