Odetta was a American Black folk singer, one of the first black women musicians to attract a large white audience. Here afro hairstyle and pride in her African features made her a role model for many black Americans.
She identified with the civil rights movement. She performed at both the March on Washington on August 28 1963 and a civil rights presentation for President John F Kennedy. She also marched in the Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches in 1965.
