Gray’s Gentleman Outfitters

Different dances required their own uniforms. Popping is a form of street dance where a quick jerking effect (or ‘pop’) is created in the arms, legs, chest or neck.
Originally from America, it was popularised locally by groups such as the Clear Crew on the Kingsmead Estate. To complete the desired look, the dancers would wear white gloves.

“There was a shop down here on Mare Street called Grays owned by two white guys, old guys. They were kind of like gentleman’s outfitters and top hats... but they sold the white gloves. So you’d go down there, get your white gloves and pop it in.” – Paul ‘DJ Rapzcullion’ Ryan
