General Sir Harold Alexander, G.C.B., C.S.I., D.S.O., M.C., Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Armies in Italy, watched keenly the succesful progress of our troops as they engage the enemy at the commencement of the great new offensive on May 11, 1944. General Alexander was appointed Commander-in-Chief on December 24, 1943. On May 12, 1944, in an order of the day addressed to his forces in Englsih, French, Italian, and Polish he declared, "We are going to destroy the German armies in Italy".
