"Suitcases are heavy so you have to grip the handle firmly. That's why we call them grips. When we came from the Caribbean to Hackney we only carried one suitcase. So we couldn't bring very much with us, mainly clothes for coming to a country with a much colder climate than ours.
When we found somewhere to live over here, many of us kept our grips on top of the wardrobe. It helped us to imagine that one day we would take it down again, pack everything up and go home. If we did go back on holiday we'd fill up a large grip with clothes and shoes to give away back home and then come back with food."
