Physical Description
This is an Air Raid Warden's box. It is made from metal and painted black with red detail and the words 'ARP' (Air Raid Precaution) in white. It has catches and handles to lift and lock the box, but the lid is missing. The ARP scheme provided bomb shelters in private homes and public places. Each ARP warden worked in one post, and was responsible for a particular area. Wardens made sure that no light was visible at night and kept records of bomb damage.
