Object history

Hackney Health Emergency was a campaigning group set up by the Trades Council, the Community Health Council and the Borough Council in response to the planned closures of the Eastern Hospital, St John's Hospital, St Leonards Hospital, the German Hospital the Mothers' hospital and St Matthew's hospital (Islington). (see also 2008.106 and 1994.12).

Orchestre Jazira and Jenako Arts
Based at the Jenako Arts Centre, Orchestre Jazira was a large multi-ethnic Ghanaian and British band playing West African Highlife Music. The centre, on Balls Pond Road, was an important hub for African and Caribbean cultural activities and education.

Music for the Cause
Local benefit concerts, like the one in this poster, actively raised funds for the campaign. Many of the musicians performing felt strongly about local health care and wanted to show their support for the campaign. Based at the Jenako Arts Centre on Balls Pond Road, Orchestre Jazira was a large multi-ethnic Ghanaian and British band playing West African Highlife Music.
