Toy theatre scenery of a staged masquerade with characters shown in assorted costume or fancy dress. In the back watches an audience in 3 theatre tiers.

Probably from 'Pollocks Characters and Scenes in the Corsican Brothers" a play based on the novella by Alexandre Dumas.

Toy theatre sets were used by wealthy children in the 1800s. This set was made in the by Pollocks of Hoxton. The theatre and its many characters could be bought ready to use or be painted at home by the children.
