This is the 'cat' from the game of tip cat, in which a shaped piece of wood (the 'cat') is propelled through the air by being twice hit with a short stick or piece of wood. The aim of the game was to achieve the greatest possible distance. This piece has an octagonal cross section tapering to two blunt points. The game was popular in the 19th century but this piece dates from the mid 20th century. As this tipcat is unmarked, it was probably never used.
