Staying Sober
The anti-alcohol Temperance Movement warned about the dangers of drink. However, they also tried to provide alternative entertainments. The Hackney & East Middlesex Band of Hope Union arranged programmes of social events to keep people sober.
They also built alternatives to the pub. ‘Coffee Taverns’ mimicked the architecture of the late 1800s pubs, such as tiled frontages and stained glass windows. This aimed to create the friendly, community atmosphere of a pub without the traps of having available alcohol.
