Fossil Horn
Fossil
1991.880
Fossil horn core. Suggested to potentially by from a Pleistocene primeval ox. 'II' in ink.
The ink annotation of the Roman numeral 'II' indicates that this is part of the collection of Joseph Simmonds Soul that was on display in Case II at Hackney Central Library during c.1920s.
It probably is included in the Soul collection catalogue as 'Horn of ?' Soul was an active collector of natural history specimens, some of which he appeared to have collected on his travels. The first recorded suggestion it is a Pleistocene primeval ox came c. 1991 when it was transferred to Hackney Museum. In the absence of further information, the possibility that this is a specimen from the late 1800s must be considered.
