Object

Fossil

Object number

1991.884

Physical Description

Antler tine. "Antler; round cross-section, tapering and curved, irregularly ridged surface, 'I' in ink, 235x30x35mm"

Object history

The ink annotation of the Roman numeral 'I' indicates that this is part of the collection of Joseph Simmonds Soul that was on display in Case I at Hackney Central Library during c.1920s.

It probably is included in the Soul collection catalogue as 'Horn of ?' Soul was an active collector of natural history specimens, some of which he appeared to have collected on his travels. In the absence of further information, it is likely a specimen from the late 1800s.

Antler identified as a modern red deer by Prof. Adrian Lister.
