"In 1985 my son was three years old. We made many friends in the borough and would meet them in Clissold Park, the Old Fire Station, at the swimming pool or at a train station from where we could go on an outing to Kew or further afield.
It was a happy time and place to be but the icy needles of the Cold War punctured our feelings of safety. We really did believe we could be on the edge of a conflict in which nuclear weapons would be employed.
The Peace Quilt was originally intended as a fund-raiser. Contributors were asked to make a square depicting an individual's ideas of 'peace' and the beauty of the quilt lies in the diversity of the images, some of them created by very skilful hands, others by people with minimal sewing ability (even a few men had a go!). It became clear that it wouldn't be suitable as a bed-cover or a wall-hanging because of its size and would be unlikely to attract many bidders so it had a brief life as an exhibit - first at the Defoe Area Residents' Association Street Party in Kynaston Road, then in Stoke Newington Library."
