Single unfolded sheet of white paper with green and red print for 'Something from Nothing', 1991.
Sistren Theatre Collective (1977 – present) began as an organisation of working class women who used popular theatre techniques to explore the social, political and legal conditions and status of Jamaican women.
Focussing particularly on poor Black women, Sistren used personal stories to critique a system which discriminated against women on the basis of gender, class and colour.
The collective toured to Hackney in 1990 to share these techniques with local women, many of whom had roots in Jamaica.

Sistren Theatre Company, the dynamic women’s theatre collective
from Jamaica, lead two days of theatre workshops which centre
around the use of theatrical techniques.
Sistren Director, Annie Blake, together with member Beverley
Hanson, will work with participants to look at ways in which an
initial idea for a play can develop to produce an end product.
Technique employed will involve trust games, character
exploration through role play, and traditional Jamaican folklore
and proverbs.
All are welcome, no auditions are required -
just a willingness to join in the fun!
Course free: £15 (£10 concessions) including tea and coffee.
Time: 10.00am - 4.30pm. Registration 10.00am. Workshop starts 10.30am.
