BUTLER AGAIN FOR HACKNEY SOUTH
____________________________________
DEAR FELLOW ELECTORS,
I have lived all my life in Hackney with you. My long record of
local and National public service is well-known. In 1945 you elected me as
your Member of Parliament, and, at the unanimous request of the Labour,
Co-operative and Trade Union movements. I appeal again for your renewed
support.
For the first time in history a Labour Government with a majority was
elected. The electors have remained steadfastly loyal and at 35 by-elections
Labour has retained every seat. We completed our legislative programme.
Labour has made political, history. We have kept our promise.
FORWARD FOR SECOND LABOUR MAJORITY.
WORK FOR ALL. In 1945 I promised to work for “Security without Unem-
employment.” Contract to-day with the period after the 1914-18 War when millions
of us were signing at the Employment Exchange for the meagre few shillings
unemployment pay. Full employment cannot be maintained without the closest
planned partnership between the Government and the people.
A MILLION HOUSES. 3 ½ million people have been rehoused in a period of
acute worldwide shortages and dislocation of international trade. In our own
Borough, every available site is being used and we shall go forward with our
plan of providing “housing for let” instead of “for sale,” as fast as our craftsmen
can erect. Labour works for “housing for letting.” Conservatives are friends
of the landlords and stand for “house for sale.”
WINNING THROUGH TOGETHER. To any Trade Union colleagues, their
wives and families, the Country owes its thanks. A grand job has been done.
Production has been increased in spite of years of Conservative politician regard
our Co-operative movement as a menace
because we have proved that we can manage our own business and help our
Country.
Industrial peace has been maintained and in four years since 1945 only one
working day was lost in trade disputes for every 18 after the 1914-18 War.
Whether we work in “public” or private enterprise, increased efficiency is our
aim and only by this can we pay for vital imports of food and raw materials.
Britain’s wealth is what we and ours create.
OUR NEEDS. Every Social service has been advanced and expanded. Family
Allowances have been paid. Old Age Pensions increased. The new National
Health Service, opposed by the Conservation Members of Parliament and introduced by the Labour Government, is the envy of the World. Specialists are
available for all free. The need of the patient is the determining factor. Only
the best is good enough for you.
The War Pensioner has had a “New Deal” and a “Fair Deal”. The Poor Law
has been entirely abolished. Labour Budgets have taken millions of workers
out of the Income Tax paying class and has made the wealthy minority contribute
in accordance with its capacity. School children have been given another year’s
schooling. University grants have been increased. Purchase Tax has been removed
from a wide range of necessities.
Inequality of opportunity based upon possession of wealth, is morally unjust
and economically unsound.
I stand for the Labour Party programme, to make our Country really great.
The only alternative to a Labour Government is TORY REACTION. You
have to choose.
Assuring you of my services in the interests of the Constituency and our
Country.
I am,
Yours sincerely,
HERBERT W. BUTLER,
The Labour Candidate
