Object history
Action Sport was a three year programme set up in 1982 and funded by the Sports Council in partnership with local authorities and voluntary organisations. The aim was to reach grassroots communities in the inner city and attract those who would not normally take part in sports. It was specifically targeted the unemployed, people with disabilities, ethnic minority groups, women and those over fifty).
Hackney Action Sport encouraged the elderly, children and people with disabilities to regularly enjoy sporting activities. The scheme that delivered sports activities across the borough, including cricket, women's keep fit, badminton and volleyball. These activities were based at local sports centres, Shoreditch Town Hall, Eton Mission and Off Centre. One project saw staff from care homes trained to give enjoyable keep-fit classes for elderly residents.
