The 291 Club was a Black variety show held at the Hackney Empire in the later 1980s and early 1990s. It launched the career of many well-known artists and performers including Curtis Walker, Ishmael Thomas and Felix Dexter.

The trio’s stage sketch show went on to become The Real McCoy, one of the first all-Black comedy sketch show on British television aired from 1990 – 1996 on the BBC.

The 291 Club

The 291 Club was a Black variety show held at the Hackney Empire in the later 1980s and early 1990s. The producer of the first two series, Charlie Hanson, was the co-founder of the Black Theatre Co-operative and had produced Desmond’s on Channel 4 before The Real McCoy.
