Black bakelite telephone with hand receiver
Bakelite
"When I was a child in the 1950s, we had a phone exactly like this. It was kept in the hall, which was freezing cold and with nowhere to sit. You had to stand up and keep your phone call short and to the point. No chatting allowed. The receiver was quite heavy in your hand, which was another reason to ring off once you'd said what you had to say. I remember my first phone number - KEN 9867 - and the lengthy time it took to dial the numbers.
It always amuses me now that these once familiar household things are now museum objects."
