3rd Memory’s Garden (IV).
In our June issue we dealt with Halley and his famous comet, although
Perhaps we Londoners were somewhat disappointed with the celestial
visitor, for the comet certainly did not show to the best advantage in these
latitudes. Another fact of interest to Shoreditch folk is brought to light
in Dr. Samuel Smiles’ work, entitled “Men of Invention and Industry.”
In the chapter dealing with the invention of the screw propeller, he states:
“The late Dr. Birkbeck, in a letter addressed to the Mechanics Register in
the year 1824, claimed that John Swan of 82, Mansfield St., Kingsland
Road, was the practical inventor of the propeller.” John Swan
was a native of Coldingham, Berwickshire. He had removed to London
and entered the employment of Messrs. Gordon, of Deptford. Swan
fitted up a boat with his propeller and tried it on a sheet of water in the
grounds of Charles Gordon, Esq., of Dulwich Hill. “The velocity and
steadliness of the motion.” said Dr. Birkbeck in his letter, “so far exceeded
that of the same model when impelled by paddle wheels, driven by the
same spring, that I could not doubt its superiority ; and the stillness of
the water was such as to give the vessel the appearance of being moved
by some magical power.”
It will thus be seen, and the fact is certainly of interest to us, that a
former resident of Shoreditch played his part in company with Watt,
Bramah, Ressel, Trevethick, and Francis Pettit Smith, in bringing about
an invention that has revolutionised marine engineering.
