Object history
A gold embossed envelope containing money, given as a Vietnamese new year present in 1999. A red envelope is believed to bring good luck to the recipient for the coming year. Money is given inside, but may be a small, token amount.
Many Vietnamese refugees have settled in Hackney since the late 1970s and continue to practice cultural traditions. This envelope was given to the owner by the resident monk at a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in Homerton.
